With recycling becoming increasing popular, using an AL-KO Silent Power Shredder, garden refuse can be reduced into small pieces suitable for composting. The new anti-friction roller system reduces power consumption by up to 35% and also reduces noise pollution. Branches are drawn in automatically by the cutting mechanism and with its innovative cutting technique, the Silent Power 5000 can cut through wooden materials up to a diameter of 40 mm, whilst still maintaining an extremely high feeding performance. Solid and dependable - We bought this shredder having used the comparison last autumn carried out by the Good Housekeeping Institute - it was one of the three top-scoring machines. It is quiet, and efficient, and produces pieces about 1 - 2 inches in length that can either be put on the compost heap or used as a mulch. So far it has coped with with most varieties of garden waste and prunings, although we haven t tried to shred anything very soft and green (there would be no point, better put straight on compost heap). The intake point is quite easy to direct things through, although it s happiest with straight rather than very bushy twigs - it was a bit puzzled by our prunings of lavender and twisted hazel, though it did munch them up eventually without jamming. All told, I think it is worth the money (we paid £248) although it is not - and I know this is a bit childish - quite as excitingly whizzy as I thought it was going to be.It was easy enough to assemble the stand and the directions for this and for using it are simple.
